Charles Rogers' Great Arcade [vertical file]

Where Goulburn's Huntley Arcade building is to be found in Auburn Street, Charles Rogers' impressive Great Arcade building used to stand. Before this, from around 1850, it was the site of the Plough Hotel, then the Daniel O'Connell and finally the Butchers Arms. Charles Rogers, a prominent Goulburn businessman, bought the old hotel and completed his 'Great Arcade' in 1884. The building had three floors, and in it's day, was 'one of the finest emporiums in Australia'. It was a distinctive building, it had an exceptionally high tower, which was later declared unsafe and dismantled in 1911. The Arcadia Skating Rink was another building of the same width and alignment as the Auburn Street store, but fronted Sloane Street. The two buildings were not connected. The ground floor under the skating rink was used for Rogers' storage for his wagons and coaches, also stabling for his large team of horses. Rogers' left the Great Arcade in 1901 to move into the Furner and Jones premises he had bought on the corner of Auburn and Montague Streets. The Goulburn Co-operative Stores operated in the Great Arcade building for around 30 years, handling groceries, clothing, furniture and general necessities. Other businesses operating in the building included Gray's Bazaar, National Furniture Company and Waltons, before a period of vacancy then reconstruction to form the Huntly or Huntley Arcade. The skating rink was demolished.
